Description
The WMSU-University Student Council, in partnership with the Ateneo de Zamboanga University School of Medicine, recognizes the need for environmental advocacies that posses direct and tangible implications. With this inspiration in mind, the USC in partnership with ADZU SOM, has ventured in an advocacy entitled: I Can Make a Difference. This program is intended to gather empty aluminium soda cans that shall be endorsed to the ADZU SOM in the person of John Michael Dellariarte and shall be used in the latter’s research. In the research, the aluminium cans shall be converted into a solar reflector to aid in Solar Disinfection of water (SODIS) which was recommended by WHO as a simple, non-costly, sustainable means of water disinfection. SODIS is done by filling clear PET bottles with raw water then exposing these bottles to direct unimpeded sunlight for 6-8 hours. Interruption of SODIS by cloudy weather necessitates sunlight exposure for 2 consecutive days. Solar reflectors used in previous studies, decreased the time necessary for total water disinfection to only 1 hour thus extending the convenient applicability of SODIS even to communities with naturally erratic weather.
