REMEMBER the popular TV commercial of a leading germicidal soap many years ago where the mom had a "talk-with-my-conscience" moment which ended with her choosing the right soap brand at the grocery?

Just like in real life, the responsibility of choosing what is best and safe for the family usually rests on a discerning mom's shoulders. But how do we determine if the products we use are ideal?

Rick Passo Camille, thanks for reposting and retweeting this link and for sharing it with your sister and brother in law, whom I greatly admire, as I greatly admire you, too. The work that you all are doing with HHN is truly lifechanging, empowering and inspirational. I particularly am interested in your use of cutting edge smartphone technology to educate your constituency and literally the entire planet. It is not just marketing, it is a campaign to help make informed and healthy choices in very profound ways. And it paves the road for similar breakthroughs.. some of which i am endeavoring to develop here in Las Vegas via its emergent tech corridor. I fervently hope that our paths will continue to cross, to grow and to expand. My efforts are just a drop in the bucket to yours .. but collectively shared drops can turn into streams of profound change.

Yes, the Sunstar does a lot of environmental reporting. Here is another one:

excerpts from this important article; read it in its entirety at

      http://www.mangojuiced.com/2011/10/20/beauty/read-the-label/:

Human Nature, a social enterprise that makes natural products sourced from the Philippines, launched their Read the Label database and app (free for iPhone and Android at http://humanheartnature.com/readthelabel/main.html) last week at Bonifacio High Street. Some mind-boggling facts I found out there were:

      –          Of the hundreds of common ingredients used in cosmetics and beauty products since the 1930s, only eight have ever been banned.

60% of what you apply on your skin goes into your body.

Information is power. Read the label of the products we buy and find out if each of those ingredients is actually safe for use by checking them against free online databases, such as the Human Nature database or the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database.  If you have an iPhone or Android, there’s even a free downloadable Read the Label app for your phone, so you can check products while shopping!

http://luckycitrine.blogspot.com/2011/10/human-nature-wants-you-to-read-label.html Human Nature launches their first smartphone app that's like a dictionary of the ingredients of cosmetics and personal care items. You can download it for free on your iPhone, iPad, iTouch, and Android devices. (An online PC version is also available.) It's a cool app that instantly shows how safe or toxic an ingredient is (labeling it as safe, low risk, medium risk, and high risk). This serves as a handy and helpful guide for when you're shopping for cosmetics and encounter an unfamiliar ingredient you want to check.
