Startup Weekend Announces More Than 50 Events to Take Place during Global Entrepreneurship Week

Global Startup Battle Will Pit Best and Brightest Startups from Around the Globe Against Each Other

SEATTLE, Nov 07, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Startup Weekend, the 54-hour event where innovative minds come together to conceptualize and launch companies, today announced that it will again be a featured event of Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) 2011. Founded by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, GEW is a worldwide celebration of creativity, innovation and ingenuity designed to inspire entrepreneurial thinking and encourage entrepreneurs to launch new ventures. In the United States, Startup Weekend will host more than 50 events during the Week, spurring firm creation from coast to coast.

Startup Weekends are three-day events — Friday through Sunday — where developers, designers, marketers, product managers and startup enthusiasts come together to share ideas, form teams, build products and launch startups. Beginning with open mic pitches on Friday, attendees bring their best ideas and lobby others to join their teams. Over Saturday and Sunday, teams focus on customer development, validating their ideas, practicing LEAN Startup Methodologies and building a minimal viable product. On Sunday evening, teams demo their prototypes and receive feedback from a panel of experts. During the span of two weekends that bookend GEW, entrepreneurs all over the world will build enterprises through Startup Weekend events.

"Startup Weekend is a bedrock initiative of Global Entrepreneurship Week, serving communities and industries around the globe by connecting aspiration and imagination with resource and expertise," said Carl Schramm, president of the Kauffman Foundation. "It is an important piece of the connective tissue that links the world’s startup ecosystem."

Through local, national and global events, GEW spans 123 countries with more than 37,000 activities throughout the Week. From Nov. 14 – 20, GEW will showcase how ideas can be turned into reality, and how entrepreneurs with varied backgrounds and experiences can create sustainable businesses that create and move markets. Startup Weekend is a way to foster entrepreneurship and generate job creators.
