SINGAPORE : Worldwide entrepreneurs have been urged to work with one another across geographical borders to solve common challenges that confront different societies.

Making the call was Singapore’s Acting Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, who has urged them to reach out to potential partners, suppliers and collaborators.

Speaking at the World Entrepreneurship Forum dinner on Thursday evening, Mr Teo said Singapore can be an ideal location for companies which seek out cross-border collaborations.

Currently, the Republic is a thriving business hub, with 160,000 enterprises, including 36,000 international companies. And it has consistently been ranked tops in the World Bank’s annual Ease of Doing Business survey, and well-connected to the dynamic Asia-Pacific market with some 3 billion people, all within a seven-hour flight radius.

Singapore also has a network of free trade agreements spanning the globe.

Mr Teo said: "In recent years, Singapore has put in much effort to building an entrepreneurial and vibrant economy. In fact, the Action Community for Entrepreneurship (ACE) was established in 2003 to facilitate this effort. It brings together entrepreneurs, policy makers and professionals to establish a pro-business environment in Singapore, improve the financing landscape for start-ups and young companies, and promote an enterprising and innovative mindset among our people.

"In line with these efforts, I am glad that over these few days, Singapore is hosting this forum to provide a useful platform for entrepreneurs, social entrepreneurs, experts and policy-makers from all over the world to come together to share ideas and experiences, so that we can help to shape the world in a positive way through entrepreneurship."

Meanwhile, four personalities whose entrepreneurial achievements make them role-models have been awarded the Entrepreneurs for the World Awards.

They received the awards from Mr Teo at the World Entrepreneurship Forum.

The Young Entrepreneur Award, a new award category for entrepreneurs below 35, was presented to Reese Fernandez, co-founder of Rags2Riches in the Philippines.

Her venture has revolutionised women’s business practices and lives by transforming rugs from recycling scrap material into fashion handbags, eyeglasses or wine-bottle holders, sought by high-revenue customers, bringing revenues and self-confidence to employed women.

This year’s winner of the Social Entrepreneur Award is William Drayton, Founder of Ashoka, USA.

Mr Drayton was the first person to coin the term "social entrepreneurship".

The winner of this year’s Politician Award is Anneli Hulthen, Mayor of Göteborg, Sweden.

She is Mayor of an entrepreneurial city that has implemented several initiatives, such as "Expedition Forward", "Business Emergency Programme" or "Brew House Incubator" widely praised among European cities for their positive impact on entrepreneurs’ ventures and the related creation of jobs.

Finally, this year’s Entrepreneur for the World Award has been given for the first time to a company, FOSUN International.

The Shanghai-based conglomerate has a wide array of activities such as pharmaceuticals or healthcare.
