Bayan. Bayani. Bayanihan.

Country. Hero. Collective and Heroic Action

Gawad Kalinga is rooted in the notion of ‘Bayanihan’ – the collective efforts of heroism in local communities, one that honours ‘ordinary men and women who choose to make sacrifices for the greater good.’

In our community, their numbers are growing and GK Canada celebrates its first year anniversary by paying tribute to these heroes — corporate partners, groups and individuals in Canada who have joined the global movement of nationbuilding.  Through a culture of caring and sharing, these heroes have contributed towards Gawad Kalinga’s mission of ending poverty in the Philippines by 2024.

Telus International, SunLife Financial, Saladmaster, PIDC – Philippine Independence Day Council, Fiesta Filipina Dance Troupe of Canada, FRNAO – Filipino Renal Nurses Association of Ontario, CHS – College of the Holy Spirit Alumnae Group, Circulo Ilonggo, GK Golf, Filipino Golfers Association of British Columbia, and the Buchanan Scholarship Grants (Calgary, Alberta) are among the heroes to be recognized at “A Gathering of Heroes’ dinner event at the Toronto Don Valley Hotel on November 18, 2011.

Philippine Consul-General Pedro O. Chan, Luis Oquińena, executive director of Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation, Inc., and Tony Olaes, chairman and CEO of GK USA will be the speakers during the program with CTV’s Pauline Chan as emcee.

The One Canada GK Village campaign will be launched at the event. This campaign heralds the entry of GK Canada into the second of three phases in GK’s roadmap to 2024, the Social Artistry phase.

While the first seven years of GK form part of the Social Justice phase which is about healing, restoring and rebuilding, the second phase is about excelling and pushing the boundaries of the initiative through designer communities or model communities. Gawad Kalinga model communities are those with at least four core programs in place.  GK core programs are: 1) Child & Youth Development and Education (GK SIBOL, GK SAGIP, GK SIGA); 2) Environment (GREEN KALINGA);  3) Food Sufficiency (BAYAN-ANIHAN); 4) Community Health (GK KALUSUGAN);  5) Infrastructure (Shelter and Site Development; 6) Productivity and Livelihood  (GAWAD KABUHAYAN) ; 7) Values Formation/Community Empowerment (KAPITBAHAYAN)

Giving the campaign a big boost is GK Canada’s recently acquired status as a registered charitable organization in Canada. ###
