Gawad Kalinga raises $350K in Vegas ball
MANILA, Philippines – Over $350,000 was raised by the nonprofit organization Gawad Kalinga (GK) at its GK Hope Ball held in Las Vegas recently. The amount raised will be used to build 150 homes for 150 families in Bagong Silang, Caloocan.
Vice President and Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) chair Jejomar C. Binay, who graced the event, said, "I am glad that GK is now a partner of the national government in addressing the issue of shelter.”
GK partnered with the Makati City government during Binay's term as mayor to build a GK community in Bulacan.
At the event, the organization also turned over 30 houses to 30 families.
Binay said GK's core value of volunteerism has led Filipinos to lend a helping hand to the national government in dealing with the housing problem (a backlog of 3.7 million houses), addressing poverty, and promoting good governance.
During his Las Vegas visit, Binay also met with the Filipino American community, including young professionals.
"I encouraged them to find strength and pride in their Filipino heritage," Binay said.
He also challenged them to get involved in GK.
“I further challenged them to be involved in Gawad Kalinga and to help in nation-building, emphasizing the need for all of us to move forward as 'One Filipino'," Binay added.
Binay also paid a courtesy visit on Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman and they talked about the welfare of Filipinos in Las Vegas and economic cooperation.
“I informed him that under the Aquino administration, the Philippines is committed to provide a favorable business environment for foreign and local investors, and is seriously addressing the issues of corruption, good governance and peace and order,” Binay said.
