Some 150 families in Bagong Silang, Caloocan are assured of decent homes as the Gawad Kalinga (GK) was able to raise US$ 350,000 during its fund- raising event in Las Vegas, USA.
Vice President and Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) Jejomar C. Binay, who arrived from Las Vegas early Tuesday morning, said the amount raised in Las Vegas was intended to fund the construction of 150 housing units in Bagong Silang.
Binay also said GK also turned over 30 houses to 30 families.
“I am glad that GK is now a partner of the national government in addressing the issue of shelter,” Binay said, noting that during his term as mayor of Makati, GK partnered with the city government in building a community in Bulacan.
The HUDCC chair highlighted GK’s core value of volunteerism, which he said, has enticed Filipinos to help the Aquino administration deal with the country’s 3.7 million housing backlog, address poverty and promote good governance.
While in the United States, the Vice President also met with various sectors of the Filipino American community, including young professionals.
“I encouraged them to find strength and pride in their Filipino heritage. I further challenged them to be involved in Gawad Kalinga and to help in nation-building, emphasizing the need for all of us to move forward as “One Filipino”, he said.
Around 15,596 Filipinos live in Las Vegas, making them the largest Asian community in the city.
Binay noted that most of them are in the medical and health care sector, the entertainment and hospitality industry, and even small and medium retail business.
“As Presidential Adviser on OFW Concerns as well as Chairman of the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking and Task Force on Anti-Illegal Recruitment, I briefed them on the government’s efforts to stop human trafficking and illegal recruitment,” Binay said.
The Vice President also paid a courtesy visit to Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, and discussed with him issues concerning the welfare of Filipinos in Las Vegas and the future enhancement of economic cooperation.
“I informed him that under the Aquino administration, the Philippines is committed to provide a favorable business environment for foreign and local investors, and is seriously addressing the issues of corruption, good governance and peace and order,” he said.
